Works! Better for a robo hamster the regular size can climb out pretty easy!See below for details:PROS:-very secure tube connect-chew proof wires, no gaps to squeeze through-about 1.25ftx1.25ft which is quite larger than their cages-mat is waterproof until chewed throughCONS:-not a standalone product-easily escapable-no different than a garden fence-mat is easily chewed throughI bought this product as a way for my little guy to spread her legs. I test ran the set by placing the hamster in the cage alone with nothing else, and she climbed right out, so I settled on reducing the size so my wooden chessboard could cover the top and weighed it down with the cage, then attached the tubes. Now as you can see in the pictures she is still trying to escape, but she can't. The one way out now is if she simply pushes the fencing into a different shape exposing a hole in the ceiling then climbed out. Very possible.Do not recommend this if you do not have a way to seal and chewproof the ceiling. Otherwise if you use tubes it's a great additionAt any of my local pet stores there are similar things to this I could be. All in the range of 35-40$'s for about the same size around and the only difference is they are taller, about a foot and a half tall instead of 9 inches like this. So I bought two of these, and with the free trial of Amazon Prime free shipping, 30$'s was well worth the size of the perimeter for my guinea pig.I can see the problem with this if you have more of a climbing rodent but guinea pigs in general I hear, or at least mine, don't climb. So it's a perfect height. They easily connect together if you have multiple. My piggie really loves to roam around freely in here since it's quite a bit larger than his cage, especially with no houses or litter box in his way to run around. He likes to run and often pop corns so I know he loves it.I can see how one would be quite small for a rodent so if you buy it I really suggest you get two of them and connect them together on the floor.Do not get if your rodent likes to climb and escape, it's too short for that.(So all in all I got twice the size of those expensive ones at the store, for the same price of one of them! Felt like it was a good deal.)I needed to create a strong, non-chewable barrier so my bunnies wouldn't crawl under my TV and storage cabinets. This was perfect. It's colorful and provides just the right height so my little darlings don't get into trouble. It's very flexible and turns easy around corners for a snug fit. You can loop several of these together. The mat underneath isn't really that strong - like a plastic sheet - so I wouldn't really recommend that as a base if you were using this for smaller animals - especially if they chew. Otherwise, this is a a great product. Remember to view the height requirements - this is only a playpen meant for very small creatures.Edit: After reading through other comments, I just want to be very clear - this isn't a pen for my rabbits - just a barrier I place along open spaces on cabinets so my buns do not crawl through the decorative spacing. There is no way this would ever work as a play space for a rabbit or guinea pig (or even an active hamster). It is a very small, low cage - it looks like decorative edging that you would use in a garden. It would ONLY be suitable for a very small critter that does not actively climb. Buyer beware - check those measurements carefully before you purchase. We needed a safe place for our hamster to play. This playpen is PERFECT and I love the pad for underneath since our home is wall to wall carpeting. The pad makes it easy cleanup if our little buddy has accidents while playing. Unlike other reviews, our hamster has not figured out how to climb over top of this cage unless there is a toy beside the wall of it for him to stand on and he is almost the size of a rat so I don't know how others critters are climbing over it unless they have something up against the side for them to stand on. If you have the connection hole the wrong direction, they can stand on that, but if you turn it towards the outside, there is no where for them to stand on it. So for those that are saying their hamster escaped standing on the connection hole (that connects to a cage) you probably have it opened up inside out for your hamster, try turning it around the other direction. Our busy guy stands on the bottom bar and even being as big as a rat (he even looks half rat) he still can't reach the top enough to pull himself over. It give s plenty of room for our friend, his toys, and for him to run and play for 20 minutes a day or more.Really liked this item. Good priceThis is a fun way to interact with your small pet. Our hamster only took a day or two to master climbing out in about 2 seconds, so we have to be vigilant when using it. I had hoped that wouldn't be the case. But if you like holding your hamster it's a fun way to enrich its environment. I wanted to attach it to my Crittertrail cage but I couldn't get it to attach securely, although it did line up by placing them close together. I don't think we'll use it as much as we had hoped. The cage part of this is very good but one of my gerbils chewed through the mat in a couple of minutes. It's a good quality product, but far too small for a playpen, it gives them less floorspace than a correctly sized cage. It might be OK as a holding pen but my hamster soon figured how to climb over. So now I have taken it apart and have used the panels to create a bin cage, so I have still found the product useful. First I thought the panels were separated from one another so I would be able if they were sturdy enough from ordering one set, I could add more together. When I received them I realized they were all attached together. But then I played with them a little and realized they are quite sturdy for a small play area (we have gerbils). Gerbils are quite the little runners so I quickly realized I need two of those or three to make a bigger play area. But for the price and comparing to what's sold in the stores it is worth it. There is also a round small hole opening that is big enough for hamsters gerbils or rats. If you have like one hamster this would be big enough. This is quite sturdy and if you have an habitrail loft or house for your small pet you can fit perfectly the round opening to your habitrail hole.
